Interior design for new & remodeled homes is an ever changing thing. One of the biggest challenges for people who are building or remodeling is deciding what to do in the kitchen. Picking out cabinets can be tough especially when there are so many choices to be made, and so much to choose from.
For years now knotty alder has been the species of choice. For a rustic or old world look knotty alder is great, but there is one major drawback to knotty alder; even though it is classified as a hardwood, it is a very soft hardwood. So that means it is susceptible to nicks and dings.
So if a lot of people have been using knotty alder for quite some time, what's new? What are the trends? Well, cherry, hickory, and maple have been popular lately depending on the style and look you are going for. Rustic? Natural hickory is a nice alternative to alder. Traditional or formal? Depending upon the counter tops and appliances you use either cherry or maple can be incorporated into either of these styles quite well.
But the biggest design trend that is a surprise to me is painted white cabinets. My husband is a home building & remodeling contractor and in the last few months he has remodeled three kitchens for clients who have chosen white cabinets. The interesting thing is that all three kitchens had a very distinct style to them, each being very different from each other. One was very traditional with earth tone counter tops and cream paint, the other was very contemporary with lime green walls and a stainless steel back splash, while the third one was very formal.
So finally we are breaking out of the alder trend. Alder was to the 2000's as oak was to the late 80's/ early 90's and frankly I'm glad to see it go. The nice thing I think, is that there are a lot of options out there right now when it comes to kitchen cabinets. A lot of species are being used with a much wider range of paints colors, stains, and glazes being used as opposed to everyone having the same natural knotty alder cabinets of the recent past.
